With crisp lines, a distinctive color palette, and a quiet sense of glamour, the hotel is a desert-era relic of California modernism—lovingly brought back to life.

Geoff Allen’s vivid watercolors bring The Palms at Indian Head to life. Known for his plein air technique and rich use of light and shadow, Allen recently turned his brush to the hotel’s mid-century architecture, the jewel-like pool, and surrounding desert. In this blog, you’ll discover what inspired him, how Borrego Springs continues to feed his creativity, and how you can sign up for his watercolor workshop this March.

Geoff Allen was drawn to the purity of the pool water, the symmetry of the hotel’s architecture, and the contrast of desert flora.

“The reflections are like jewels. The hotel evokes a feeling of another era that has waned, but still, a vibrance persists,” says Allen.

His pieces celebrate the interplay of light and the stillness of the Borrego desert. The pool paintings offer a quiet nod to timeless design and a sense of place unique to Borrego Springs.

Built in the 1940s, The Palms at Indian Head is a mid-century modern boutique hotel in Borrego Springs. For Los Angeles-based photographer Tom Bertolotti—known for his portraits and cinematic, neo-noir compositions—the Palms is more than a subject. It’s a personal and creative retreat.

Since discovering Borrego Springs in 2021, Tom has returned season after season, capturing the hotel’s architecture, dramatic skies, and shifting desert light. From poolside scenes framed by Indian Head Mountain to still mornings at sunrise, his photography reveals the timeless character of this desert landmark.

“We discovered the Palms in 2021, ten days after my discovery of Borrego Springs. Back then it was the only hotel open in Borrego, and it was an instant crush. For us, Borrego Springs is a haven of peace, quiet, and relaxation—and the Palms are a haven within the haven.

We stayed only once at a different accommodation, and it totally spoiled our experience. Never again.

We are Europeans and, before moving to California in 2018, Greece was our go-to holiday destination. Greece is too far now, but we found a different Mediterranean experience at the Palms.

In early summer, I love sipping a drink by the pool or in the water, looking at Indian Head standing tall behind the hotel. It reminds me of being on a Greek island, in the lukewarm water, looking at the barren hills gently rolling down to the shore.

We have favorite winter and summer rooms. In summer, you can’t beat the convenience of the casitas—with their shaded porch and quick access to the pool. In winter, when the large pool is too cold, we enjoy rooms on the upper deck. It feels like being on a cruise ship, and the sunrise views leave me speechless every time.

My photography has been called ‘neo-noir.’ I embraced that label. I think that explains why the Palms has become such a recurring theme in my work. I’ve explored all of its nooks and crannies over the past four years, in all seasons—from 40 degrees on winter mornings to 120 on Fourth of July weekends. We were there, and pictures were taken.”

Tom’s photographs of The Palms offer more than visual documentation. They evoke memory, mood, and motion—capturing the essence of Borrego Springs through thoughtful framing and ambient light. His work explores the intersection of architecture, landscape, and solitude.
